Rob McLaren is a self-published author of a series of Napoleonic military adventures. In the style of Bernard Cornwall’s hero, Richard Sharpe, the stories follow the adventures of a French cavalryman, André Jobert, during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars.
While serving as an armoured cavalry officer in the Australian Army, Rob spent twenty years writing at a corporate level. In the last eight years he has discovered a passion for storytelling. As a veteran of active operational duty, Rob draws on his experience to bring authenticity to his stories, immersing the reader in gritty and unforgiving historic realism.
Rob is supported by a superb professional editorial team and an exemplary graphic designer. His fifth novel, If God Wills It, was released in February 2025. Rob is currently writing the sixth adventure in the series, An Eye for Ground, due for release in February 2026, and having Jobert's first adventure, Brothers of the Capucine, translated into French, Frères de la Capucine, for release in July 2025.
Rob is a member of the Napoleonic Historical Society, the Historical Novel Society of Australasia, the Australian Society of Authors and the Queensland Writers Centre.
Rob, now based south of Brisbane in Yugambeh country, is a passionate horseman, competes in the equine sport of Working Equitation, and enjoys table-top wargaming and fencing with sabres.
Rob invites you to join him 'Around Jobert's Fire', by subscribing to a monthly email. Rob and fellow Napoleonic author, Dominic Fielder, catch-up with Napoleonic enthusiasts at the Rally Point, a monthly recorded video chat.
